Symposium CI
Magnetic and Transport Properties of Oxides
Advisory Board
Invited Lectures

This Symposium aims at being a forum in which the different aspects of magnetic and transport properties of oxides such as colossal magnetoresistance in manganites, diluted magnetic moments in Zn oxides, coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism, magnetic, and dielectric/ferroelectric and magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic compounds could be discussed as a whole, together with the development of refined or novel synthesis and processing routes for amorphous, nano-crystalline and granular materials, thin films and heterostructures. Particular focus will be on a deeper understanding of the relationships among structure, particle size and magnetic properties to design novel materials, emphasis being also put on the sensitivity of the magnetic properties to the nature and properties of the interfaces (interface-mediated magnetism) due to the structural changes affecting the magnetic anisotropy, structural and chemical disorder and defects causing both changes in the magnetotransport and in the magnetic domain walls mobility, quenching moments and spin frustration alignement (like for example in ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic exchange biasing in GMR structures) and proximity effects/induced magnetism.
The possibility to produce such materials with reduced dimensionality and related nanosize effects on properties, the increasing interest attracted by diluted magnetic semiconductors for potential applications in spintronics, the recent discovery of superconductivity at temperatures higher than 50K in the rare-earth iron oxipnictides, which has stimulated remarkable experimental and theoretical efforts devoted to the understanding of the mechanism of superconductivity and of possible coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism, all constitute relevant research topics with interesting perspectives for potential applications.
